Chapter Eleven

Seb watched as Tom somehow managed to turn the pasta into a gloopy mess...again. He could see that Tom was becoming frustrated with himself by the muttering and slamming of cupboard doors. Seb had tried on several occasions to step in and help, but Tom was adamant he could do it, even though he hadn't cooked before. At the rate he was going, they would need more pasta. After a while, Seb had had enough and spoke to Tom.

"Put the timer on, Tom."

Tom growled. "No. I will do this properly. I don't need a fuckin' ticking egg-shaped device to tell me when it's done. There's a fuckin' clock on the wall for that!" He waved a hand in the general direction of the clock and continued to pour more pasta into the pan, covering it with boiling water. Why he'd added more pasta was beyond Seb. If Tom didn't finish cooking soon though, Seb was going to be starving, and he would be ordering take out. He stared at his phone and scratched his chin as he thought about what he would be ordering.

"Don't even think it, Seb," Tom muttered darkly at him, watching him with a frown on his face. "I'll do it this time."

Seb looked at the soggy vegetables and pasta sauce, now sticking to the pan looking like it would need to be soaked off. It didn't look fit for human consumption. He sighed and told himself that Tom was trying, and this was his first attempt. Maybe pasta was too hard for a first try. Soup. Yeah, he should have gone with soup. What could go wrong with that?

"Fuck, fuck, fuck! It's goin' funny again."

Seb reached over and turned the gas off, grabbing the colander and pan. "It'll have to do, 'cause I'm starving." Emptying the pan of pasta, he quickly rinsed it and mixed it with the sauce. It didn't look good. Not good at all. He swallowed hard as his stomach rolled and he continued to mix the pasta and sauce together. Seb didn't feel hungry now, but for Tom's sake, he would try.

"Pass me the plates, please."

The plates appeared in front of him and he served the pasta, putting a slice of garlic bread with it. At least the bread looked edible. Walking into the lounge, he sat down and tried to find some interest in the food in front of him.

"If I said I wasn't hungry, would ya kill me?" Tom asked.

Seb looked at Tom, who was frowning at his plate, pushing the food around it. He looked back at his own plate. "Chinese?"

The look of relief on Tom's face said it all. "Thank fuck for that. Yeah, fuck yeah."

Seb laughed. "You'll do better next time."

Tom gaped at him. "You want me to cook again? Are you mad?"

"We all make mistakes at first," Seb told him.

"There's making mistakes, and then there's giving someone food poisoning! I wouldn't give this to a dog!" Tom pointed at the food on the plate.

Laughing, Seb stood up and took the plates into the kitchen before ordering the Chinese.
